SUMMARY:IBI Presents: Directly Obtaining Signaling Small Molecules Through Industrial-Scale Microbiome Mining
DESCRIPTION:Presented By: Ross Youngs – Founder/CEO of Biosortia Microbiomics \nBoth online and in-person sessions will be offered for this event. Please indicate how you plan to attend on the RSVP form. For those will be joining us online\, a Zoom link will be sent out after you register. \nAbstract: For over 70 years\, the quest to obtain the metabolites or small molecules in unculturable microbes has been a goal of many researchers seeking the best starting points in drug and life science discovery. With only 1% of microbes growing in a culture or bioreactor\, the ability to directly obtain has been stymied by nature. The pivot to indirect methods has hit the firewall of nature’s complexity leading mostly to irrelevant and incomplete results. Learn how industrial-scale microbiome mining will open up direct access to these sought-after small molecules from potentially 100% and how this new source will impact therapeutics\, agriculture\, sustainability\, cosmetics\, and the entire range of life science discoveries. \nSpeaker Bio \nRoss has spent over 30 years inventing products\, technologies\, and processes for a variety of industries\, and holds over 75 patents worldwide. He is driven to innovate by a focus on what is better\, faster\, and less expensive. Ross’ recent major innovations include an R&D 100 Award for collaboration on biopolymer technologies. In 2009\, Biosortia was awarded a $6 million ARPA-E (U.S. Dept. of Energy R&D) grant for its algal harvesting technology\, which helped lead to the development of Biosortia’s drug discovery platform. \nIn 1998\, Ross was awarded the Ernst & Young Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year award. Additionally\, the U.S. Small Business Administration honored him as their national “Business Person of the Year” in a presentation made by Vice President Al Gore.

SUMMARY:Open Mic: Biomedical Research Ideas Exchange
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event and will not have a virtual option. \nThe Institute for Biohealth Innovation is hosting an Open Mic: Biomedical Research Ideas Exchange on the SciTech campus on the third Thursday of each month from 3:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. \nThis new monthly meeting was suggested by and will be led by Dr. Remi Veneziano\, who has appreciated working with so many of you and realizing the value of meeting as a multidisciplinary team on a monthly basis to share ideas\, express challenges\, identify new opportunities\, and establish new collaborations. \nThis event is geared for tenure/tenure track faculty\, research faculty\, post-doctoral fellows\, and senior level graduate students. This will be an “open mic” type of meeting where we will ask attendees to share a couple of slides if they have them or simply speak about their projects/new ideasand specific needs (including advice\, expertise\, instruments\, etc.). The goal is to engage in meaningful brainstorming discussions together and champion one another. We will not be looking for full presentations. Even if you don’t have something to share on a given month\, we encourage you to join regardless. Your expertise will be invaluable during the idea exchange. \nWe look forward to seeing you all there!
